Rigid and pointed structure of epidermal origin, connected to the cortex of the plant. It differs from the thorn in that it is more superficial than the latter, in addition to being easily detached from the branches. Its function is to protect the plant against herbivores. Ex: Rose bushes have thorns instead of thorns.
