Epiphyte

« Back to Glossary Index

Name for plants that grow on other plants. The epiphyte plant emits superficial roots that spread through the bark and absorb available decomposing organic matter, however in many cases their roots may be stunted or absent, so that the epiphyte uses its host only as a support. There is no relation of parasitism between epiphytes and their hosts, that is, the presence of epiphytes does not harm the tree or shrub where they grow. E.g. Orchid.
