Process of polymerization of carbon compounds with structures of aromatic rings, giving rise to lignin, a compound that gives plants physical resistance, including allowing them to resist attack by pests, diseases and fire. This process is more active when plants are subjected to stress conditions. Process by which the cells of certain plants become woody and hardened as a result of cementation of the cell walls.
