group of micaceous minerals, hydrated silicates of varied composition, originating from the alteration of micas. These minerals, when heated, lose water, swell, and acquire the appearance of a worm; they can be used as refractories, as building material for various special purposes and in agriculture, due to their ability to expand and dilate, to better distribute products and increase soil aeration.
