A family of superior plants, almost all herbaceous, with racemose flowers, provided with four sepals and petals, and four stamens, arranged two by two, the inner ones being longer. Ovary superior, bilocular; the fruit is a silique. There are about 3,000 species, typical of temperate and cold countries, many of them edible, such as kale and cabbage, and others ornamental.
