Ground

It is the layer that covers the rocks, consisting of variable proportions and types of minerals (formed by weathering of the underlying rock, the parent rock) and humus (organic matter decomposed by the action of soil organisms). It also refers, more narrowly (especially in agriculture), to the layer where plant life can develop.
