Rhytidome

« Back to Glossary Index

It is the name given to the older portions of the suber that are detached from the surface of the trunks of woody plants, constituting their outermost layer. It is the outer layer, made up of dead cells, from the bark of trees and other woody plants. The rhytidome of some species is of commercial interest, as is the case with the cork oak, whose rhytidome is cork, and the pine, whose rhytidome is holm oak, used as fuel and filling material.
