It is the peripheral and young part of the wood of the trees, which with the passage of time dies and becomes the heartwood. The living cells of sapwood make up the xylem and have the function of conducting water and nutrients (raw sap) from the roots to the leaves. The sapwood is light in color, while the heartwood is darker in color.
