Deutzia gracilis, commonly known as slender deutzia, is a deciduous, branched shrub native to Japan. It has a rounded and dense appearance, reaching approximately 5.9 feet (1.8 meters) in height. Its branches are initially erect but become arching as they grow, giving the plant a rounded look. The leaves are simple, opposite, dark green, and oval to lanceolate in shape, with serrated margins.

Slender deutzia blooms from mid-spring to early summer, lasting about two weeks. The flowers are arranged in dense terminal racemes and are bell-shaped, white, and delicately scented. They resemble stars in shape and are quite attractive to bees and butterflies.

Belonging to the same family as hydrangeas, slender deutzia is a small-sized shrub ideal for brightening up various spots in the garden with its white flowers. It can be grown individually, in groups, or as hedges, forming charming borders. A profusion of flowers perfect for adorning gardens in subtropical to temperate climates.

It pairs well with conifers, azaleas, heathers, and more. It’s perfect for gardens with rounded, informal, or natural lines, characteristic of English, cottage, and even Japanese styles. It can also be planted in pots and containers, with the ‘Nana’ variety being a standout choice due to its dwarf size.

Slender deutzia should be cultivated in full sun or partial shade, in fertile, well-draining soil enriched with organic matter and regularly watered. Hardy and low-maintenance, slender deutzia rarely suffers from pests and diseases.

However, it’s essential to note that the branches weaken over time, and rejuvenation pruning should be done annually after flowering to stimulate vigorous new growth. Provide monthly fertilization during the growth and flowering periods using garden fertilizers suitable for these times. It can be propagated through seeds, cuttings, layering of branches, and by dividing rooted stems.
