The genus name Alocasia was coined by botanist Robert Sweet from the combination of the Greek prefix a- (privative or variation) with the name of the related genus Colocasia, indicating morphological similarity but a clear taxonomic distinction. The specific epithet micholitziana honors Wilhelm Micholitz (1854–1932), a German explorer and botanical collector who gathered plant specimens in Asia for the English horticultural firm Sanders & Co.

Frydek Alocasia stands out as a focal plant in bright interior arrangements, living rooms, protected patios, and sunrooms. - Light: Requires bright diffused light or partial shade. Avoid direct sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., which causes irreversible leaf scorch and fades the velvety texture. Indoors, place the plant near bright east- or north-facing windows without direct sun exposure.
- Substrate: Needs a light, highly porous, airy, and fertile mix that prevents water buildup. An ideal blend includes 1 part well-aged organic compost, 1 part garden soil, 1 part finely shredded pine bark, 1 part washed coconut chips, and 1 part washed coarse river sand. The ideal pH is between 5.5 and 6.5 (slightly acidic).
- Watering: Should be moderate and frequent. Keep the substrate lightly moist, waiting until the top 0.8 in (2 cm) of the surface dries before watering again. Avoid waterlogging so the corms do not rot. Reduce watering frequency in fall and winter. Use filtered water or water that has been left out to sit, as this species is sensitive to excess chlorine and mineral salts.
- Climate: It grows best in warm tropical and subtropical conditions, in a temperature range of 68°F to 86°F (20°C to 30°C). It is sensitive to cold below 59°F (15°C) and to frost. Temperatures below 54°F (12°C) trigger the plant’s physiological dormancy.
- Humidity: It requires high relative humidity, above 65%. In dry environments or air-conditioned spaces, the leaf edges dry out and become more vulnerable to pests. Use humidifiers or group plants together to create a suitable microclimate.
- Fertilizing: During spring and summer, supplement with a liquid 10-10-10 NPK fertilizer diluted to half the manufacturer’s recommended strength every 15 to 30 days. Slow-release fertilizers (such as 14-14-14) applied at the beginning of spring provide a steady supply of nutrients. In the garden, well-aged organic fertilizer or bone meal can be applied on the surface every three months.
- Pruning: Only clean up and remove old, yellowing, or damaged leaves. Cut the petiole close to the base with clean, sterilized scissors.
- Leaf care: Do not use commercial leaf-shine products, furniture polish, or oils (mineral or vegetable). These products clog the stomata and damage the plant’s characteristic velvety coating. Remove dust with a dry, soft-bristled brush or with a gentle shower of water at room temperature, then let it dry naturally.
- Dormancy management: If the plant loses its top growth during winter because of cold, do not discard the pot. Reduce watering almost completely to prevent the corm from rotting in the soil, and wait for new growth to resume naturally as temperatures rise in spring.
- Repotting: for potted plants, replace depleted and compacted substrate every two years with a fresh, fertile new mix. Buy a potting mix formulated for anthuriums or bromeliads, or make your own mix according to the proportions in the substrate section.

How to Propagate Frydek Alocasia
Frydek Alocasia is propagated by vegetative methods, using the plant’s underground structures in early spring.
Division by side corms is the simplest technique. During repotting, carefully remove the clump and examine the substrate around the main rhizome. Locate the small globular corms that form at the ends of the underground stolons. Gently separate these corms and plant them individually in small pots filled with a light, airy substrate. Keep the substrate moist and the pot in a warm location protected from direct sun until the first roots and leaves emerge.
Another option is dividing the main rhizome. Cut the rhizome with a sharp, sterilized blade, making sure each section contains at least one active bud and fleshy roots. Dust the cuts with ground cinnamon to help with healing before planting in the final containers. Experienced growers can also try making a small cut in the plant’s corm/rhizome and applying a gel made with IBA or algae to encourage sprouting.
In large-scale commercial production, micropropagation through laboratory tissue culture is the method used to multiply healthy, uniform, pathogen-free plants.

Botanical Description of Alocasia micholitziana
Alocasia micholitziana is a perennial, monoecious herbaceous plant with a terrestrial growth habit. It has a moderate size and grows in clumps, with leaves grouped at the end of a short to elongated stem, which may grow upright or decumbent, reaching approximately 20 in (50 cm) in length and 1.6 in (4 cm) in diameter.
The underground stem consists of a tuberous rhizome, a thickened structure that stores reserves and produces new shoots. From it develop underground stolons, whose ends form small cormels, also called secondary corms. The rhizome and cormels are important storage and regenerative organs, allowing the species to produce new shoots.
The leaves are simple, entire, and arranged in a terminal cluster, usually four to seven per plant. The leaf blade is sagittate, with a shape similar to an arrowhead, showing pronounced basal lobes and margins that vary from slightly to strongly undulated.
The leaves reach approximately 16 in (40 cm) long by 5.1 in (13 cm) wide, although size can vary depending on the plant’s stage of development and growing conditions.
The upper surface of the leaves is dark green, with a velvety texture and matte finish, a standout ornamental trait of the Frydek Alocasia. The underside is lighter in color. The midrib and primary veins are white and stand out sharply against the leaf blade. The venation is pinnate, with primary lateral veins branching from the midrib and curving toward the margins. The secondary veins are less prominent and may show little visual distinction from the leaf blade.
The petioles are long, reaching approximately 18 in (45 cm) in length. They have a sheath on the lower portion, partially enclosing the stem, and may show coloration or mottling in brown, reddish, or purplish tones. The petiole attaches to the blade in a superficially to slightly peltate manner, a trait that varies with leaf age.
The inflorescence consists of a spathe that partially encloses a spadix. The inflorescences may appear in groups of up to four, on peduncles reaching approximately 8 in (20 cm) long. The spathe is about 5.5 in (14 cm) long and is differentiated into two regions. The lower portion is the tube, ovoid in shape, approximately 1.2 in (3 cm) long, and green in color. The spathe blade measures approximately 4.3 in (11 cm) long, opens widely during anthesis, and may become partially reflexed at the base and hooded at the tip.
The spadix is sessile, meaning it is attached directly at the base of the spathe, and measures approximately 3.5 in (9 cm) long, corresponding to about three-quarters the length of the spathe. It is organized into distinct floral zones: a basal female zone, a sterile intermediate zone, and an upper male zone, along with a terminal appendix made up of sterile structures.
Pollination is carried out by insects, as occurs in many Araceae species. After pollination, the inflorescence may develop an infructescence protected by the basal portion of the spathe. The berries that form are fleshy.

Main varieties and cultivars of Alocasia micholitziana
- ‘Frydek’: The standard cultivated form, prized for its dark green leaves with a pronounced velvety feel and contrasting ivory-white veins.

Pests, diseases, and solutions
Spider mites are the most common pest in protected growing conditions and dry indoor environments. They settle on the undersides of leaves and on the petioles, leaving the foliage looking dull, with yellowish speckling and fine webbing. Control involves increasing air humidity and applying potassium soap or neem oil as a spray in the late afternoon.
Mealybugs often hide where the petiole sheaths join and beneath the leaf blade. Manual removal with a cotton swab or spot treatment with potassium soap is enough to handle early infestations. Thrips may also attack young expanding leaves, causing distortion and silvery patches; management involves control with neem oil.
Root and corm rot, caused by fungi in the genera Pythium and Phytophthora, is the most serious disease. It develops when the soil stays waterlogged and air circulation is poor, leading to petiole collapse and softening of the rhizome. Prevention requires using an airy substrate and keeping a strict watering routine.
Bacterial leaf spots, caused by species of Xanthomonas and Erwinia, appear as water-soaked lesions surrounded by yellowish halos. To contain the spread, remove affected leaves, avoid wetting the foliage during watering, and improve air circulation. Dark necrotic spots caused by anthracnose (Colletotrichum spp.) should be treated with cleanup pruning of affected leaves and preventive application of Bordeaux mixture.
