Benefits of Growing Your Own Mango Tree
Having a mango tree at home offers environmental, economic, and personal benefits. Besides fresh fruit, you improve air quality and enhance your space!
Choosing the Right Seed
Select a ripe and healthy mango. Avoid damaged fruit and opt for varieties that germinate easily, such as Tommy Atkins or Kent.
Seed Anatomy
The seed consists of three parts: Shell – protective layer, Seed Coat – covers the embryo, Embryo – where the plant starts to grow
Materials Needed
You'll need: 1 cup of water, Kitchen scissors, Paper towels, Plastic bag, Medium pot with soil
Preparing the Seed
Carefully remove the seed from the shell. Wash it thoroughly to remove any residue. Soak it in water for 24 hours.
Seed Germination
Wrap the seed in a damp paper towel. Place it inside a plastic bag and keep it in a warm place. Wait 1 to 2 weeks for germination!
Planting the Seed
Plant the germinated seed in a pot with well-draining soil. Water lightly and keep the soil moist.
Ideal Growing Conditions
Sunlight: 6 hours/day, Temperature: 75°F to 86°F (24°C to 30°C), Humidity: 60% to 80%
Caring for the Seedling
Prune weak branches to strengthen the plant. Water without overwatering. Use a 10-10-10 NPK fertilizer monthly.
Transplanting the Mango Tree
Once the seedling is strong, transplant it to a permanent location. Choose well-draining, sunny soil.
Pest and Disease Control
Regularly inspect leaves and roots. Prevent mold by ensuring good ventilation. Use homemade fungicides, such as Bordeaux mixture, if necessary.
When to Expect the First Fruits?
Your mango tree may take 3 to 5 years to bear fruit. Proper care speeds up the process!
